This is a really informative document describing the geological and lost mine information for the Llano uplift (txrockhound.zboxhosting.net/rock/gold.html). Anyone been to the Heath Mine north of Llano? I have found the Central Texas Mine on a USGS Topo map but not the Heath Mine.

This summer I got to do something I never thought in my wildest dreams I'd get to do. I toured a real Alaska commercial gold mine. It is called the Pogo Mine about 120 miles (70 miles of highway and 50 miles of dirt road) south and east of Fairbanks. It is a hard rock drift mine (yep, just a series of tunnels in the mountain). They are mining two large quartz veins laden with gold. I didn't get to see the pay layer (the gold vein) which was a downer but I understood. We toured the mine in the back of a personal hauler (like a tractor). We went in about 1000 yards and saw a lot of the mine equipment in demonstration. The Widow Maker hand-held drill was violently loud and we all had to put our ear plugs in. After the mine tour, we were bused to the mill site (only about 1000 yards from the maintenance yard and the mine portal). The mill is where they turn the mined ore into gold bullion. They use three processes to extract the gold from the quartz ore. Before any of the extraction begins, they pulverize the quartz ore into a fine powder. They use two huge mills to do this, a SAG (Semi-Autogenous Grinding) mill and a Ball mill. Since the quartz ore is so abrasive, the mill staff has to replace the two mill's steel balls EVERY shift! The SAG mill uses 25 pound steel balls to crush up the ore to pea size gravel (15% of the SAG mill contents are these balls). Then the resulting gravel is sent to the Ball mill which uses 5 pound steel balls (20% of the content are these steel balls) to crush up the pea size gravel to a powder (much like flour). They then add water and create a slurry. The slurry goes three different extraction processes, gravity, frothing, and cyanide leaching with carbon in pulp. I won't bore you with those details because we couldn't see much of these processes. The end result is that they capture 99% of the gold from the ore and it is melted into bullion on site. The Pogo Mine just passed the 500,000th ounce of gold extracted (worth 481,000,000.00 US Dollars @ 962.00 per ounce). We got our pictures with a couple of the bullion bars (I'll have to scan them in). The largest weighed 75 pounds and was worth 821,000.00 US Dollars. Frickin' hell was it dense and heavy. Pogo spends $460.00 per ounce to get it out of the ground. Still, that is quite a margin! Mark Gaither PS. The owners of the Pogo Mine (Teck Cominco) are currently exploring other leases in the same area. From the looks of the operation, they should be successful. I've posted some images that Staci Genetti took at: picasaweb.google.com/markg454/PogoMine Ref: www.infomine.com (search for Pogo) www.teckcominco.com

Sir, I am representing a family who owns a mine field totalling 250 acres of virgin land mass in West African country of Burkina Faso. This mine field is rich in Gold and Diamond in large quantity. What we need now is a foreign mining company or private partners who can go directly into a joint partnership agreement with us to explore and develop the mine field to enhance productivity with modern mining equipment. All the necessary documents like mining license etc issued by the authorities are available on demand by interested paties. Gold buyers who can purchase up to 500Kg of gold per month are also welcomed to do business with us. Let us have your comments back Tanguy Glokpon tcg2net@yahoo.com

Thanks Kevin - Wow 100 mesh is tiny. I was able to get a magnifier and good ruler and measured my kitchen strainer. It turns out to be 28 mesh based on number of holes per linear inch and it appears to me to be about window screen size mesh. HEB had two strainers and I got the one with the smallest mesh. I classified my cons thru the 28 mesh then ran it thru the Blue Bowl. Found fine color from the Thermal City cons and a very small piece or two from my Halliburton cons. Guess I need to get a 100 mesh and rerun it all again.
Phil
- Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 11:05:50 (EDT)
Hi Phil, I can't help you with the mesh size of kitchen strainers. I use one to start processing cons from the Llano. I use it to get everything out but the sand. My 100 mesh screen is the one that makes the blue bowl work for me. Material that won't go through a 100 mesh will occasionally have a small spec or two, but I typically find those when I quick pan the material before processing. Most of my ultra fine gold will easily pass through the 100. Folks refer to that mesh as window screen, but I think it is even smaller. If you have a bluebowl and want to separate the Llano gold, you should have a 100 mesh in your inventory. I don't think they make a kitchen strainer with that small a mesh.

Anyone have an approximation of the mesh size of typical kitchen strainers that can used for classifying for a Blue Bowl? Some have larger/smaller mesh than others.

Hi Donny, gold can be found in the Llano River about an hour west of Austin. There is free access and prospecting at a location known as "The Slab" which is a low water crossing. You'll find directions to The Slab on our home page. Most of the gold you find in the river is very tiny, hard to hand pan. I use a blue bowl to get it separated from the huge amount of black sand. Some folks have even found nice pickers. Good luck prospecting.

Mr Bean, El Paso chapter has claims that you can camp on, and Tuscon and Phoenix chapters have lots of claims for $30-40 annual memberships...that is cheaper than buying until you are sure of what you want to do.

Mr Bean, haouling water to the desert works but classify out some of the oversize to save water. Also in dry areas you may have a lot of fine clays that make your water dirty quickly and drywashing with air helps blow off the fine light material.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the update on Long's. The little ruby pieces may be garnets. I find them all the time, and have seen some as large as a pea from the Llano. You also may have some very tiny gold specs in your cons. It is very difficult to get them to penetrate the black sand while panning. I use a blue bowl to get them out. Good luck digging!

I wish i would have had a dredge there were a couple of NICE holes i wanted to check out. Like nice where i can almost gaurantee there is gold in them!

Hi Knapperhead, most all land in Texas is private property. Navigable waterways such as the Llano River are public, provided you can find access. Low water crossings on public roads are a good access point. The road cuts are probably State owned. The rest is probably private. If anyone else out there has anything to add, please do.

Last Wensday I got out to the slab and did two test pans with my new hex pan and got 1.65 troy ounces of lead and two specks of gold. Most of the lead was shot but there were a few small caliber bullets too (all were .22 long rifle rounds). I went back on Thursday and completely dug out the same spot but only got .85 more ounces of lead and 5 much smaller specks of gold. I was wondering how much lead yall pull out on an outing. Total I got 2.01 troy ounces of lead. Thanks J.W.

Hi Johnny, In regards to your question about Malcoms... I always seem to find my best and most gold at his property. I seem to do the best prospecting at the confluence of the Llano and the creek (Pennington) that is on the far side of his property. Malcom's price to prospect is a little steep for me, but I always do good there. Gold has been found in all of his creeks and some has even been found at some of the highest points of his property. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions send me an email. My address is on the "Email Us" link to the left.

Hi Jack, I have one and I like it. It is small enough to carry long distances and I think it works very well. Cleanup is easy and it works well with the smaller plastic buckets. I have a Keene A52, but I can't tell you which works better. The Keene will process more material. I like using the EZ sluice when working dry cracks in the bedrock. Less material, but better quality.

I have spent the last 2 summers in Ruidoso and have been all over the places looking for a spot to dig. Most are mark posted or with claims marking the trees. I went all the way up pasted White Oak to the place where the old ghost town is located. The Fed's have marked the whole area with signs offering you a $10,000 fine if you get caught off the road. I will probably go back to play the horses and slots for this summer. If you find more good info please tell us and I will do the same. A fulltime Rv'er with a couple of pans to sell.

Mr.Bean, not to worry about AMPO. The CEO isn't making a dime and is risking quite a bit of his personal assests to get this going. There are plans to get properties in Texas for us...it takes money, which means folks are going to have to join. Walt Easton is a stand up guy and not only has plans for TX, but nationally. If you need more info, give me a call at the phone # listed in the GPAA magazine.

Mr. Bean, the outing anouncment is posted on the home page and if I'm not mistaken, an email was sent out to all signed up for such. As far as the AMPO, this is a nonprofit orginization which will fight the legal battles to keep land open. The mining law that protects miners is 120+ years old and is being attacked those who really don't want you on public lands.

Hi Everyone and Friends! Sorry I've been away so long, but other important duties have pretty much taken over ANY free time (and $$) I have. It's amazing how much attention 15month olds require...and, how well my prospecting equipment can catch cobwebs, rust, and dust! I sure miss the days of just getting up and going on 15mins warning...now, I need a month! I heard about Mr. Arnold being sick, but I haven't caught up with the latest news yet. Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to seeing you all very soon. Thanks and take care!

Mr BEAN, I think the Motherlode trip is a better option as far as costs are concerned. Just a reminder for everyone.... if you join the GPAA or renew your membership, be sure to tell them you are part of the Round Rock Chapter. Our club will earn valuable points towards merchandise for future "door prizes".

Cool Thanks Kevin... I was kinda ecited about joinin an Austin based Metal Detecting Club, but that link wasn't Austin nor a club...LOL.. I'll deff be goin to the Belton show.... on a different note... have ya noticed most of the so called new gold shows on tv, aren't new but just showing repeat clips from older shows and the new ones they show they have already startin to repeat within the 1st 4-5 new ones... sad...i've DVD'd about 100+ of the old shows and really liked them, until they getoff on some lame tangents like cookin fishin... etc...and those Alaskin shows...I mean really... thats half the shows... and whose goin to spend 2-3,000 dollars on a trip you might comeback with 200 bucks in gold...LOL .. I'd deff be into takin a trip with RRGPA to the motherload in Calif...i'm sure we would have much better luck there at much less than 1/10 the cost of Alaska...watcha think Kevin ?... Grif ?

Hi Johnny, what is your email address? I am seeing 6 pending email additions to our list. It could be possible that your ISP is blocking the email sent from our server, or possibly, the signup confirmation email was marked as "junk" by your email program. One of the pending addresses is obviously misspelled. Instead of posting your email here, you can send me a request to be added. My address can be found on our "Email Us" link to the left. I'm sorry for all the trouble, but our ISP requires records for bulk emailing.

Kevin, I see we have a trash email on the site again. Now on to my next comment. I am very sorry that Billie and I were not able to make the last meeting due to a previous commitment. I had posted a comment on the GPAA forum as to try to get people to attend. I got several replies a sent them to our website for meeting info. I am very glad to see the minutes of the meeting posted for all to read, as I think informed people will stay much more interested in the chapter if they know what is going on. I agree with the statements about all need to try and help the club as a whole, finding claims, helping to organize some outings, and getting our meetings more consistent. Thank all that attended and to all the officers who are trying to keep our chapter together.

As of 7PM on Wed May 16, 2007, the river guage southeast of Mason on Llano River is at 2.18 ft (flood level is at 13ft). http://ahps.srh.noaa.gov/   The graph depicts that the river is receding daily, so by Saturday, it should be just fine, but I'm no hydrologist.

There's speculation that the Outdoor Channel is for sale. The sale of GPAA/LDMA to Tom Massie may be positioning the Outdoor Channel for this possibility. Taking GPAA/LDMA private under Tom Massie hopefully will keep it alive under someone whose has a prospecting heritage and interest whereas under new ownership they might not survive in their current form.

Leroy, I don't have a precise answer as to the time stamp being Eastern Daylight Time. The cgi program used to generate this "chat page" uses standard code to generate a time stamp on Unix based servers. Never paid much attention to it. I do try to monitor the content that is posted here and I will edit and delete unacceptable postings. I have included code that blocks some of the bad posts, but it can't catch all of it. And I don't check this page daily like I used to. If I see a trend in bad postings, I will add code to block it in the future. Been prospecting lately?

Hahaha! yeah the weather didn't hold up it's end of the bargain did it. I spoke with Billy Caldwell who also went to the Mason dig, he said he found a lot of what he thought was Topaz. He said there is something distinctive that shows up under jewelers loop, but what it is I don't know, I just know he has a bag full them. How was the Mason dig anyone? I went to the Slab on Saturday (only had a couple of hours) and did some prospecting. The recent rains have changed the topography somewhat, but not much. Let's just say I don't see so many tailing piles anymore :-). Settled on one of the middle long islands close to the bridge and ran two buckets thru my new Wolftrap sluice. Has anyone been out to the Llano River since all the rain? Hi Allen, Flower Gold is gold that has the consistency of baking flower. It's very hard to trap with modern equipment (ex. sluicebox) if water flow is too fast. It can also float on water (b/c of water tension) and go right back where it came from if you're not careful. Soapy water helps reduce this.

San Saba Outing Report: About 100 people showed up. Many dredges and highbankers of different configurations. There were people metal detecting, panning, and just having a great time. Some found gold using slow recovery systems (cleanup equip), from what I saw from the show and tell, it was about 20-40 specs and 4-6 flakes. Someone found a nice arrowhead and I found a flint scraper tool. Most were working flood benches in the river. Those reporting finds were getting it from first 1ft of dirt, nothing deeper (flood gold). Pictures of the outing can be viewed on the Llano Message Board http://groups.yahoo.com/group/llanotxgpaa/ See ya'll next time!

Big thanks to Kevin for oustanding service. I ordered a set of $5 rock crusher plans and he hand delivered them to me with a smile. I'm really happy to meet someone else with the bug. Hope to meet you all at the slab soon. Jim

I joined Gpaa just recently, I received my membership kit today. I missed your Feb. trip and will miss the March meeting. But I would like to get out gain some experience. If someone is wanting to go prospecting one week day next week and just needs aomeone to tag along so they won't have to go alone, I would like to go. I have no prospecting experience, but I will help you anyway I can. I do have experience with a shovel. This way I get out and learn something. My email is fm1825@sbcglobal.net Allen Updike Pflugerville

I just joined GPAA, a couple of days ago. I put RR as my local group. I am looking forward to some fun times, but I don't think I will be able to attend Sat. outing. Besides at this time I have no equipment nor do I know what I need. Guess I will find out the first meeting I can make. Be safe Sat and good luck.

I just realized that the meeting and the slap trip are next weekend, not tomorrow! Darn!!!! I have got the fever really bad and my wife has plans for me the weekend of the 24th. Does anyone know if I can prospect out there in Kingsland by myself or do you have to be with the group? I am dying to get my hands dirty this weekend and I don't want to do "honey do's". Thanks Matt

We plan on coming out to the slab on Saturday. We are going to stay in a hotel in either Austin or Kingsland Friday night and show up at the river as early as my wife will let me! Ha Ha I will be bringing my springer spaniel as well, I hope that is not a problem. Just to make sure that I find every one etc., here is my cell phone number: 936-203-7498 I would hope that someone could call me Saturday am and let me know where everyone is having coffee and/or breakfast, so that we can meet up with everyone. If not, we will be getting in trouble at the slab! Thanks for your time and hospitality! Matt Trusskey

Found the following on 49'er Mike's web site regarding gold locations: --- Williamson County Texas by Tom Ashworth Georgetown North of Georgetown 20 miles, in weathered outcrops of iron stained limestone, the assays made in 1883 showed presence of good values of gold. This is some real fine gold. --- Can anyone shed further info on this??

Tom, use sand or rough, small gravel and use your hand to rough up the pan. You can use sandpaper, just make sure it's a fine grit.

I am ready to start practicing my panning. My wife thinks she remembers Tom or Perry saying on one of the TV shows that you need to rough up the botton of your new pan with sandpaper. Anyone have an opionion on that?

Hi everyone. I had to edit one of the entries on this page because it was throwing off the page spacing. Cutting and pasting long web addresses tends to do this. I have links posted on our home page that shows maps to Long's and the Slab. If these map links don't work, let me know and I will fix them. Happy propsecting in 2007!!!
